Artificial Turf Installation in East Yorkshire
Artificial turf gives you a consistently green, usable garden surface all year — no mowing, no muddy patches in wet East Yorkshire winters, and no browning in dry summers. Evergreen Landscaping installs artificial grass across East Yorkshire with the correct aggregate base and membrane preparation that keeps the surface flat, draining, and looking its best long-term.
Where artificial turf makes practical sense
Artificial turf is particularly well-suited to East Yorkshire gardens that struggle with real grass — shaded rear gardens where grass never really establishes, small courtyards, areas next to paths where real turf gets churned to mud in wet weather, and gardens used intensively by children or dogs. It's also the right choice where someone wants a presentable green space without the time or ability to maintain a real lawn.
The base: the part that determines performance
Poor artificial turf installations fail because of what's underneath, not because of the grass itself. Turf laid on soil, sand, or inadequate hardcore will settle unevenly, pond water, and begin to look lumpy within a couple of seasons. We excavate to the right depth, compact a layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore, top it with a layer of sharp sand compacted and screeded flat, and lay a weed-suppressant membrane before the artificial turf goes down. This base keeps the surface level and ensures rainwater drains through rather than pooling on top.
Artificial turf specification: pile height and density
Not all artificial turf is alike. Pile height determines how the turf looks and performs — shorter piles (20–25mm) read as a neat formal lawn; longer piles (30–40mm) look more naturalistic. Pile density affects how the turf wears and springs back. We work with quality products rather than the cheapest available because the difference in longevity and appearance is visible within a year. We'll show you samples so you can see how the turf looks in natural light before ordering.
Joining, fixing, and edging
Where multiple rolls of artificial turf need to be joined, the join must be invisible in the installed direction — we cut into the pile row and glue the join on a jointing tape so the seam disappears. The perimeter is fixed with galvanised nails or adhesive to a timber edging board or straight hard surface. Neat edges are what separate a professional installation from a DIY one.
Kiln-dried sand infill and maintenance
Once the turf is laid and fixed, we brush kiln-dried sand into the pile to help the blades stand upright and add ballast to the surface. A power-brush lifts the pile after installation to give it the appearance of a well-maintained lawn from day one. Ongoing maintenance is minimal — occasional brushing to lift the pile and remove leaves, and a rinse with water for pet-used areas.
How We Work
- 1
Free site visit and quote
Andy measures the area, assesses drainage, shows turf samples, and provides a written quote.
- 2
Excavation and hardcore base
Existing surface is removed, the area is excavated to depth, and a layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore is compacted in.
- 3
Sand layer and membrane
Sharp sand is laid, compacted, and screeded flat. Weed-suppressant membrane is laid over the top.
- 4
Turf laying and fixing
Artificial turf is rolled out, trimmed to fit, joins glued on tape, and perimeter fixed securely.
- 5
Infill and power-brush
Kiln-dried sand is brushed in and the pile is lifted with a power brush to achieve a natural standing finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does artificial turf last?
Lifespan depends on product quality, installation, and use. A quality artificial turf on a correctly prepared base installed by Evergreen Landscaping will give many years of good service. We'll be honest about the products we use and their expected longevity.
Is artificial turf safe for children and pets?
Yes — quality artificial turf is non-toxic and safe for both children and pets. For areas used heavily by dogs, a regular rinse with water keeps the surface fresh. Lead-free products are widely available and we use only suitable products.
Does artificial turf get too hot in summer?
In full direct sun on warm days, artificial turf can be noticeably warmer than a natural lawn. A light spray of water cools the surface immediately. For East Yorkshire gardens, which are rarely in sustained intense heat, this is typically not a significant issue.
Can you install artificial turf around trees and irregular shapes?
Yes — we cut the turf around existing features and to irregular perimeter shapes. We'll discuss how to handle any tree roots or drainage gullies during the site visit.
