Turf Laying in East Yorkshire

A fresh lawn transforms a garden faster than almost any other single job. Evergreen Landscaping prepares ground and lays turf across East Yorkshire — properly, with the topsoil preparation and drainage work that East Yorkshire's clay subsoil requires to give the turf the best possible start.

Why ground preparation determines everything

Turf laid directly onto clay soil, rubble fill, or builder's waste will struggle from the first dry spell. Roots can't penetrate compacted or poorly structured soil, the lawn browns in summer and waterlogged in winter, and the investment is wasted inside a year. We excavate, remove any debris, and lay a suitable layer of quality topsoil — raked to a firm, fine tilth — before turf goes down. The extra time in preparation is where lawn longevity is decided.

East Yorkshire clay and drainage

Much of East Yorkshire sits on heavy clay, which drains slowly and can remain waterlogged after sustained rainfall. A lawn on clay will pond, compact under foot traffic, and develop moss patches if drainage isn't considered at installation. Where the ground conditions warrant it, we incorporate sharp sand into the topsoil or advise on a drainage layer beneath to improve the water movement through the profile. This is especially relevant in lower-lying areas around the Vale of York fringe and near the Humber.

Turf selection

We source quality cultivated turf — not the cheapest available — because the grass variety mix in the turf affects how well it establishes, how it tolerates shade, and how it looks once it settles in. For most East Yorkshire domestic gardens we use a hard-wearing amenity turf mix that's robust under family use. Shadier gardens may benefit from a turf mixed with shade-tolerant varieties. We'll discuss the options at the site visit.

Laying, butting, and rolling

Turf is laid in a brick-bond pattern so the joints don't line up and create visible channels. Rolls are butted tightly together without stretching — stretched turf gaps as it settles. We work off boards to avoid compressing the prepared soil. Once laid, the turf is gently rolled to ensure good contact between the roots and the topsoil beneath, and then thoroughly watered in.

Establishment care advice

Newly laid turf needs water and patience. We give every customer a straightforward establishment guide covering the first four to six weeks — watering frequency, when to begin mowing, and when the lawn can take normal foot traffic. Following these steps is what separates a lawn that establishes quickly from one that struggles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to lay turf in East Yorkshire?

Turf can be laid almost any time the ground isn't frozen and isn't in drought. Spring and autumn are traditionally the best seasons — mild temperatures and natural rainfall support faster establishment. Summer laying is possible with consistent watering.

How long before I can use the lawn after turf is laid?

This depends on how quickly the turf roots into the topsoil beneath it, which varies by season and weather. We'll give you specific guidance at handover — typically you're looking at several weeks before the lawn takes normal foot traffic.

Can you lay turf on a slope?

Yes — turf can be laid on gentle to moderate slopes. On steeper banks, individual rolls are pegged to prevent movement while the turf roots in. Very steep slopes may be better suited to planting or ground cover than a mown lawn.

Do you remove the existing grass before laying new turf?

Yes — we excavate and remove the existing surface before preparing and laying new turf. Turf-over-turf doesn't work: the old grass creates an uneven surface and the decaying layer beneath causes problems as the new turf roots in.
