Block Paving in East Yorkshire
Block paving is the practical choice for driveways and parking areas where load-bearing performance and long-term durability matter. Evergreen Landscaping installs block paving across East Yorkshire — from concrete block and clay brick sets to permeable systems — with proper edging and drainage so the surface stays level and weed-free.
Driveways and parking areas built to last
A block-paved driveway takes daily vehicle loads, freeze-thaw cycles, and the constant movement of East Yorkshire clay beneath it. Getting the sub-base right is the difference between a driveway that looks the same in fifteen years and one that sinks, ruts, or heaves. We use a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base of the correct depth for your soil conditions and vehicle load, creating a stable platform before a single block is laid.
Pattern, bond, and block choice
Block paving isn't one look. Herringbone bond is the strongest pattern for driveways because the interlocked diagonal prevents rocking and creep under vehicle loading. Stretcher bond and basket-weave offer different aesthetics for lighter-traffic areas. Block colour and texture range from clean grey and buff through to charcoal, red, and multi-tone blends. We'll show you options and can mix borders in a contrasting colour to frame the driveway.
Permeable block paving for surface water
Covering more than five square metres of driveway with an impermeable surface requires SuDS-compliant drainage in most planning situations. Permeable block paving — where jointing sand or permeable aggregate fills wider joints between specially profiled blocks — allows rainwater to drain through the surface itself, reducing run-off. We can advise whether a permeable system is the right solution for your driveway and ground conditions.
Edge restraints and haunching
Without solid edge restraints, blocks spread outward over time, joints widen, and the surface deteriorates rapidly. Every block-paved area we install has edge courses haunched in concrete so the perimeter is fixed permanently. This is non-negotiable for vehicle-loaded areas and makes the difference between a driveway that holds its shape and one that doesn't.
Kiln-dried sand and finishing
Once blocks are laid and compacted with a plate vibrator, we brush kiln-dried jointing sand into the joints to lock the blocks in place and prevent weed establishment. The surface is compacted a final time, swept clean, and checked for level across the whole area before we hand over.
How We Work
- 1
Free site visit and quote
Andy measures the area, assesses ground conditions and drainage, discusses block options, and provides a written quote.
- 2
Excavation and sub-base
We excavate to the required depth, remove all spoil, and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base in layers to achieve a stable platform.
- 3
Edge restraints
Concrete edging is laid and haunched on all sides to contain the block surface permanently.
- 4
Laying and compacting
Blocks are laid to the chosen pattern on a compacted sharp-sand bed, cut to fit the edges, then compacted with a plate vibrator.
- 5
Jointing and handover
Kiln-dried jointing sand is brushed in, the surface is compacted once more, cleaned, and handed over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does block paving require planning permission for a driveway?
For driveways over five square metres that drain to the road, permeable paving avoids the need for a drainage condition. We can advise on permeable options and whether your specific project needs any consent. For certainty, it's worth checking with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council planning department.
Can block paving be repaired if a utility company digs it up?
Yes — this is one of the practical advantages of block paving. Individual blocks can be lifted, the trench reinstated, and blocks re-laid. We'd recommend saving any leftover blocks from the original installation for this purpose.
How do I keep block paving weed-free?
Properly installed block paving with kiln-dried jointing sand significantly reduces weed ingress. Over time, windblown seed can germinate in joints — a seasonal weed treatment and occasional re-sanding keeps the surface looking clean.
Do you do both driveways and garden paths in block paving?
Yes — block paving works equally well for pedestrian garden paths, courtyard areas, and vehicle driveways. The sub-base specification differs for each use, which we factor in at the site visit.
