Natural Stone Paving in East Yorkshire
A well-laid natural stone patio transforms how you use your garden. Evergreen Landscaping supplies and installs Indian sandstone and other natural stone surfaces across East Yorkshire — handling everything from ground preparation and drainage to pointing and finishing so the result stands the test of time.
Why natural stone suits East Yorkshire gardens
East Yorkshire's clay-heavy soil moves seasonally with moisture. If paving isn't bedded on a correctly prepared sub-base with adequate drainage channels, settlement and cracking follow within a few winters. We excavate to the right depth, lay a compacted aggregate sub-base, and use a semi-dry mortar bed so water drains away rather than pooling beneath the slabs. The result is a surface that stays level and looks sharp season after season.
Indian sandstone — character and longevity
Indian sandstone brings natural colour variation and a riven surface texture that sits beautifully in garden settings. Each slab is unique, with tones ranging from warm buff and honey through to silver-grey and Raj green. The natural texture provides grip underfoot in wet conditions, making it a practical choice for patios, pathways, and garden steps. We source calibrated stone so the thickness is consistent, ensuring an even finished surface.
Pointing and jointing done properly
The gap between slabs is where many paving jobs fail. We use quality pointing mortar suited to the stone type and weather exposure. Joints are finished neatly and consistently — not so tight that moisture becomes trapped behind the stone and not so wide that weeds establish. A well-pointed patio also resists ant infestation far better than poorly finished work.
Patios, paths, steps and driveways
Natural stone is versatile. We lay it for main patio entertaining areas, garden pathways, side-return passages, and decorative steps. Blending stone sizes and borders adds detail and frames the space. If you're combining a patio with raised beds or walling, we plan the project as a whole so the stone colours and finishes work together across the garden.
Edge restraints and finishing
Every paved area we install includes proper edge restraints — haunched in concrete — to prevent the perimeter slabs from creeping outward over time. We also sweep excess mortar off the surface and leave the site clean. If you're in a conservation area or working with a listed building, we can discuss appropriate traditional materials and bonding patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you supply the stone as well as lay it?
Yes — we handle both supply and installation. We'll talk through stone types, colours, and sizes at the site visit so you know exactly what you're getting before any work starts.
Is natural stone suitable for an East Yorkshire driveway?
Natural stone can work for driveways with the right sub-base specification. We assess load-bearing requirements and drainage during the site visit and advise on whether stone or block paving is the better fit for your specific situation.
What happens to the soil and spoil you dig out?
We remove all excavated material from site as part of the project. You won't be left with a pile of soil to deal with.
Can you match existing stone on a partial renovation?
We'll do our best to source stone that closely matches existing work. Natural stone varies by batch and quarry, so we'll show you samples before ordering.
