Fencing and Gates in East Yorkshire
Sound fencing defines boundaries, creates privacy, and gives gardens structure. Evergreen Landscaping installs timber, featherboard, and close-board fencing alongside timber and metal gates across East Yorkshire — setting posts correctly and selecting materials that stand up to the region's coastal and Humber-influenced wind exposure.
Wind exposure matters in East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire's position — open ground to the north, Humber estuary influence to the south — means fence panels take a battering that inland gardens don't see. Solid panel fencing in exposed situations needs robust posts set at the correct depth and concreted in properly, or the first big blow takes the whole run. We assess the site's exposure and specify post size, depth, and concrete volume accordingly. Where exposure is severe, we discuss hit-and-miss or slatted designs that reduce wind loading without sacrificing privacy.
Close-board and featherboard fencing
Close-board fencing — featherboard timber nailed to arris rails fixed between posts — is the most durable fence construction for residential gardens. Unlike panel fencing where a single broken panel means replacing the whole section, individual boards in close-board construction can be replaced without touching the rest of the run. The overlap between boards also makes the fence more resistant to wind than flat panels. We use tanalised (pressure-treated) timber throughout for longevity.
Panel fencing and decorative options
Lap panel, trellis-topped, and contemporary slatted panel styles suit gardens where a cleaner aesthetic is the priority. Modern pressure-treated panel systems have improved considerably and can perform well in moderate exposure with correct post installation. We can combine panel sections with trellis toppers to add height where needed without creating a solid barrier that looks imposing from the house.
Timber and metal gates
A well-hung gate finishes a fence run properly. We install both timber field gates and traditional five-bar styles as well as metal powder-coated gates for side access and rear entrances. Gate posts are set deeper and in more concrete than fence posts — a gate exerts significant lever load on its hanging post, and undersized posts are the most common reason gates drop and stop latching. We also install pedestrian and driveway gates on the same visit as fencing work where the two are part of the same project.
Gravel boards and post caps
Timber fence posts and boards rot first at ground level where moisture sits. Gravel boards — a sacrificial horizontal board at the base of the fence — keep the featherboards clear of the ground and can be replaced inexpensively when they deteriorate, extending the life of the fence above them considerably. Post caps reduce water ingress at the top of the post. We include these details as standard on close-board work.
How We Work
- 1
Free site visit and quote
Andy measures the run, checks levels, assesses exposure, discusses materials and style, and provides a written quote.
- 2
Post setting
Fence posts are set at the correct depth and haunched in concrete, with gate posts set deeper for the additional load.
- 3
Rails or panel fitting
Arris rails are fixed between posts (close-board), or panel framework is fitted and panels hung in place.
- 4
Boards, panels, and gravel boards
Featherboards are fixed individually (close-board) or panels positioned and secured, with gravel boards fitted at the base.
- 5
Gates, caps, and finishing
Gates are hung and adjusted, post caps fitted, and all waste removed from site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to tell my neighbours before replacing a shared fence?
Boundary responsibility depends on your deeds. It's always worth having a conversation with neighbours before fence work starts, particularly if the fence is on or near the boundary. We can advise on boundary marking but the legal position is between you and your neighbour.
How deep do you set fence posts?
Post depth depends on fence height and exposure. As a general rule we use one-third of the total post length in the ground, but in exposed East Yorkshire sites we go deeper and use more concrete. We specify this on a site-by-site basis.
Can you replace just part of a fence run if only some posts have failed?
Yes — we can replace individual posts and sections rather than the whole run if the rest of the fence is sound. We'll assess the whole run at the site visit and give you an honest view on what needs doing and what doesn't.
Do you supply and fit, or just fit if I buy the materials?
We handle supply and installation as a complete service. We can also work with materials you've already purchased if they meet the specification required — discuss this at the site visit.
