Timber Decking in East Yorkshire
Timber decking extends your living space into the garden and works especially well where a level patio isn't possible — stepped gardens, slopes, or raised entertaining areas above an existing feature. Evergreen Landscaping designs and builds timber deck structures across East Yorkshire, selecting appropriate timber and detailing the build so the deck drains, breathes, and lasts.
Structure first: why the frame matters as much as the boards
A deck is only as good as its subframe. We build on a pressure-treated timber subframe with correctly spaced joists, supporting posts set on adjustable steel post bases or concrete pads above the ground — never buried in soil where timber rots fastest. Joist spacing is chosen to match the board span without flex underfoot. The frame is levelled carefully, because a twisted or uneven frame always shows in the finished boards.
Timber board choice and treatment
Pressure-treated softwood deck boards are the practical choice for most East Yorkshire gardens — treated against rot and insect attack, and available in a smooth or ribbed finish. We select boards with consistent grain and minimal knots so the finished surface looks clean. Hardwoods such as brown oak or iroko offer richer colour and naturally higher durability, though at greater cost. We'll discuss the options and their practical implications at the site visit.
Drainage and ventilation beneath the deck
East Yorkshire's annual rainfall means a deck that traps water or doesn't breathe will deteriorate prematurely. We leave a minimum gap between the boards for drainage, ensure the area beneath the deck has adequate ventilation, and where the deck is low to the ground we use weed-suppressant membrane to reduce moisture-retaining vegetation underneath the structure.
Steps, balustrades, and access
A deck at height needs steps and often a balustrade for safety. We design these as part of the overall structure, not as an afterthought. Steps are built with non-slip profiles, and balustrades can be timber, powder-coated steel, or glass panel depending on the look you want and the view you're trying to frame. If the deck adjoins a door threshold, we ensure the transition is weather-tight and level to avoid trip hazards.
Finishing and maintenance advice
Once the deck is built, we can apply a decking oil or stain as a first treatment and walk you through an annual maintenance schedule — cleaning, checking fixings, and re-oiling — so the deck retains its appearance over the long term. Properly maintained timber decking rewards the care put into it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does timber decking need planning permission?
Most domestic timber decks fall within permitted development — generally where the deck is no higher than 300mm above ground and covers less than 50% of the garden. Decks on listed buildings or in conservation areas have stricter rules. We'd recommend checking with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council if you're in any doubt.
How long does timber decking last?
Well-built and properly maintained pressure-treated timber decking has a good working life. The longevity depends on timber quality, build detail, and annual maintenance (cleaning and re-oiling or staining). We'll give you maintenance guidance at handover.
Is decking slippery when wet?
Ribbed or grooved deck boards provide better grip than smooth-faced boards. We can also apply a non-slip additive to a decking oil if your site is particularly shaded and prone to algae growth in East Yorkshire's damp winters.
Can you build decking at different levels?
Yes — split-level decks with connecting steps are one of our most requested designs, particularly in gardens with a slope or where you want to zone different outdoor spaces.
