Porcelain Paving in East Yorkshire

Porcelain paving delivers a contemporary, ultra-low-maintenance surface that holds its colour and finish through years of East Yorkshire weather. Evergreen Landscaping installs large-format porcelain tiles for patios, pool surrounds, and garden terraces — combining precision laying with the correct adhesive system so the surface performs as well as it looks.

What makes porcelain different from natural stone

Porcelain is a fired ceramic product with colour and texture running through the full thickness of the tile. Unlike natural stone, it is non-porous — so it won't stain from leaf tannins, algae, or food and drink. This makes it particularly practical in East Yorkshire where autumn leaf-fall and damp conditions can mark natural stone if it isn't sealed regularly. Porcelain requires no sealing, no impregnators, and no annual treatment.

Large-format tiles: why the sub-base matters even more

The appeal of porcelain is its clean, minimal-joint look achieved with large tiles — typically 600×600mm up to 900×600mm and beyond. But large tiles are unforgiving: any movement in the sub-base telegraphs directly through the tile as a crack. On East Yorkshire clay, this means a deeper, more carefully compacted base than you'd use for smaller natural stone flags. We specify the sub-base depth and drainage solution based on the ground conditions we find on site.

Adhesive-bedding system vs mortar bed

Large porcelain tiles can't be laid on a traditional sand-cement mortar bed the way natural stone is — the tile face needs full contact with the bedding adhesive to avoid hollow spots that crack under load. We use a polymer-modified full-contact adhesive system suited to external use, which creates a far stronger bond and eliminates the hollow spots that cause tile failure.

Colour and finish options

Porcelain is manufactured to consistent dimensions and available in a wide range of finishes — wood-effect planks, stone-effect slabs in cream, grey, anthracite, and bianco, and smooth or textured anti-slip surfaces. We'll discuss finish options and show you samples so you can see how the colour looks against your house brick and garden planting before committing.

Maintenance and longevity

Day-to-day, porcelain needs only a brush and occasional wash with a mild detergent. Algae can be removed with a patio cleaner — no pressure washer required. The fired-in colour doesn't fade in UV light, so a porcelain patio laid today will look the same shade in ten years' time. This makes it an excellent long-term investment for East Yorkshire gardens.

How We Work

  1. 1

    Free site visit and quote

Andy assesses the ground conditions, discusses tile options and finish choices, and provides a written quote before any commitment.

  2. 2

    Excavation and sub-base

We excavate to the depth required for the ground conditions found, remove spoil, and compact a well-graded aggregate sub-base with appropriate drainage.

  3. 3

    Adhesive bedding

A polymer-modified external adhesive is applied to ensure full contact coverage beneath each tile, eliminating hollow spots.

  4. 4

    Tile laying and levelling

Tiles are laid to the planned falls with consistent, minimal joint widths and checked throughout for level and alignment.

  5. 5

    Grouting and finishing

Joints are grouted with a suitable external grout, the surface is cleaned down, and the site is left clear on completion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is porcelain suitable for a driveway?

Porcelain can be specified for driveways with the appropriate sub-base and tile thickness (typically 20mm pavers for vehicle loading). We'll assess load requirements at the site visit.

Will porcelain crack in East Yorkshire winters?

A correctly installed porcelain patio with proper drainage is frost-resistant. The risk of cracking comes from an insufficient sub-base or hollow spots in the bed — both of which we address with our full-contact adhesive system.

How do I clean porcelain paving?

A brush and occasional wash with a mild diluted detergent is all that's needed. There's no need for pressure washing or chemical sealers.

Can porcelain be combined with natural stone in the same garden?

Yes — we often combine porcelain patio areas with natural stone steps or borders. We'll help you choose colours that complement each other during the design discussion.
